NAPS Detachment Grand Opening
In December of 2009, construction started on a Nishnawbe Aski Nation Police Detachment on Mattagami First Nation. The detachment is located beside the General Band Office and was finished in May of 2010. The detachment is a state of the art 2,500 square foot facility that will provide an independent office for our NAPS officers as well as a holding cell and a garage for the NAPS vehicle.
The building was constructed by CGV Builders who employed some band members during construction. It is through the efforts of the leadership of Mattagami First Nation and Wabun Tribal Council that this detachment was made possible. Funding was provided by both the Ministry of Public Safety Canada as well as the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services.
New Membership
Recently there has been a hold on accepting new transfers into Mattagami First Nation. In July of 2010, there will be a Membership Meeting regarding this issue. If anyone has an interest in transferring to Mattagami First Nation they are to contact Melissa Ethier, Membership Administrator at the Band Office.
The date for the membership meeting will be posted once it is confirmed.
General Election
Mattagami First Nation falls under Section 74 of the Indian Act to elect a Chief and Council. The Council consists of one Chief and four Councillors who have a term of two years. The next election for Chief and Council will be in April of 2011. Correspondence will begin for this election in January of 2011. It is the responsibility of off reserve members to provide their correct mailing information to the Membership Administrator in order for the Electoral Officer to be able to contact you.
As well, once nominations are complete, candidates will be given the opportunity to post their information on our website. This will give off reserve members an opportunity to learn about the candidates running for office.
